"An insult to human dignity": Mother of Bondi stabbing victim hits out at the media

The mother of Bondi stabbing victim Jade Young has hit out at how social media and major news outlets reported on her daughter's death.

Jade Young, 47, was one of six people fatally stabbed by Joel Cauchi during his violent rampage at Bondi Junction Westfield on April 13th.

Following the tragedy, graphic videos and images of the attacks were circulated online.

Now, Jade's mother Elizabeth Young, writing in the Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday, said it was “shameful” how her family found out about Jade’s death.

“Members of my family recognised Jade and her husband Noel in uncensored vision being played on a mainstream TV news feed, with vision of Jade lying on the ground at the shopping centre, receiving CPR,” she wrote.

“The vision, shared on social media and picked up — and used by — multiple news media programs shared my daughter’s final moments with millions. Finding out that a loved one has been murdered is a horror that I do not wish on anyone. But seeing the vision of their last moments and knowing it has been broadcast to millions of people is an appalling breach of privacy and an insult to human dignity.”

Ms Young went on to say how some of the major media organisations that shared violent images of the Bondi stabbing “approached our family within hours of the attack, offering their condolences … and the opportunity to share our family’s story”.

“These same media organisations reported the failure of a certain popular social media platform to take down videos, without acknowledging their own complicity,” she said.

“I am not surprised at their hypocrisy, but I am angry.”

“Sharing violent images or personal material from the lives of victims of crime is not free speech — it is enormously profitable for some but it’s speech with a steep price for the victims,” she said.

“Those who run social media platforms are remote from the pain inflicted by their uploads and the dystopia they have helped create. It is the victims who bear the cost.”

Last week, hundreds of mourners attended a public memorial for Ms Young, an acclaimed architect and mother-of-two, where mourners were encouraged to wear colourful clothing “in memory of Jade”.

Image credits: Getty Images / Facebook

"Never again": Bondi stabbing victim’s mother shares heartbreaking plea

The tragic events of April 13th at Westfield Bondi Junction shook the nation to its core. Among the victims of this senseless act was Jade Young, a 47-year-old architect, described by her mother Elizabeth as "glorious" and "hardworking". Her life was abruptly taken while shopping for a birthday present with her daughter.

At a memorial service held in Sydney’s Botanic Gardens, hundreds gathered to pay their respects to Jade. At the request of Jade's heart-broken mother, Elizabeth, mourners adorned themselves in bright colours, a vibrant tribute to a woman described as "dearly loved and irreplaceable".

Elizabeth's words cut through the sombre air, pleading for attention not only to her daughter's memory but to the pressing issues that led to her untimely demise.

“I would like you to listen, I want Australia to listen,” Elizabeth said. “Jade Young was attacked and killed outright in front of her daughter.”

As part of her tribute, Elizabeth then made a poignant call for action. “Never again do I want to read the words tragic or tragedy associated with the perpetrator of the murder of my daughter,” she said. “He came prepared, he had intention. He was a killer ... making a shopping centre the most dangerous place on earth for Jade.

“I want Jade’s girls to grow up believing there is security, goodness and love in the world. I want politicians both federal and state to address the gaps in mental health care to make it a safer for our girls and all Australians.”

It's a wish echoed by countless families who have been touched by tragedy and who long for a safer, more compassionate society.

The outpouring of support following Jade's passing speaks volumes about the impact she had on those around her. Her colleagues at Georgina Wilson Associates, where she dedicated over a decade of her life, shared heartfelt messages of grief and disbelief. "Jade was family," they wrote, a sentiment that resonates with all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In the wake of this tragedy, the generosity of strangers has shone brightly, with over $235,000 donated to support Jade Young's husband and daughters. It's a testament to the kindness and compassion that exist within our communities, a glimmer of hope in the face of darkness.

Images: GoFundMe

Mick Jagger's daughter arrested

The daughter of the Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger has been arrested in Spain following a hostile altercation with police.

Jade Jagger, 51, has being accused of going on a drunken tirade and allegedly assaulting several national police officers in Ibiza, Spain, according to reports by Page Six.

The reports claim that Jagger became "very aggressive and violent" when police were called to help mediate an altercation she was involved in at a restaurant.

Jade and one of her friends involved in the confrontation were reportedly under the influence of alcohol or "some type of substance".

Before the police were called, the British jewellery designer had a disagreement with restaurant staff, while her male companion began allegedly “shouting, threatening and insulting” them.

The police then arrived at the restaurant to defuse the situation, where Jade's friend "pounced" on the officers, while Jade was allegedly heard shouting “stupid police” and other rude remarks.

It is unclear if Jade remains in police custody, but a local Spanish outlet states she is expected to be “brought to justice” at some point on Friday.

Jade is one of Mick’s eight children. She is his only child with ex-wife Bianca Jagger.

The Rolling Stones frontman also shares daughter Karis, 52, with actress Marsha Hunt; daughters Elizabeth, 39, and Georgia May, 31, and sons James, 37, and Gabriel, 25, with ex-wife Jerri Hall; son Lucas, 24, with model Luciana Morad Gimenez; and son Deveraux, 6, with girlfriend Melanie Hamrick.

Mum breaks down after people make fun of her baby’s name

A tearful mum-fluencer has taken to TikTok to call out the “cruel” adults making fun of her son’s name.

Liana Jade and her partner Connor Darlington often post videos about their lifestyle, pregnancy and parenting, racking up over 2.7 million followers on Youtube.

The couple have an eight-month-old son, with an unusual name that is meaningful to them- Koazy, pronounced “cosy”.

Jade was minding her business when it was brought to her attention that people had mentioned her son’s name in another influencer’s video.

In an episode of The Unplanned Podcast hosted by US couple Matt and Abby Howard, the pair discussed unusual baby names and said that quirky choices for baby names in 2023 were becoming “ridiculous”.

They also mentioned that it’s not a great idea to name your child something quirky, especially when they become adults.

Although they didn’t mention Koazy’s name specifically, the people in their comment section were more relentless, as they began ripping at Koazy’s name.

Visibly upset, Jade posted her own TikTok and explained why she chose that name.

“People have said we called him Koazy because he was cosy in the womb,” she said.

“But no. It was a name we already had and as I was getting so heavily pregnant, people were saying ‘he’s so cosy in your belly’.

“It confirmed to us that is what we should name him... we were like ‘Oh my God, it’s meant to be’.”

Jade also mentioned that she understood Koazy’s name wasn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea and that “everyone is entitled to their own opinion”.

“But it’s just different when there’s this comment section open on such a big influencer’s video of people, fully grown adults, just sat there slandering my baby’s name.

“I think it’s quite cruel – and if I had posted that video personally, I think I would have been very mindful of who was being named and how that can have an effect on other people,” she said.

Jade’s TikTok has since gone viral with over 6.8 million views, and fans have supported her right to name her child whatever she liked.

“Koazy is a lovely name,” one person wrote.

“Everyone has an opinion, but a name is personal to the parents who chose it and shouldn’t be judged by anyone else. Stay strong,” commented another.

The Howards have since turned the comments off their podcast.

Image: Instagram, TikTok

Body language expert reveals “telling” signs Michael Clarke lied

A body language expert has weighed in on the infamous public scuffle where former Cricketer, Michael Clarke, was accused of cheating on his girlfriend, Jade Yarbrough.

Louanne Ward, an Australian relationship expert, told The Daily Mail that some of Clarke's words and actions were indicative of him not telling the truth.

The first sign that Clarke wasn't being truthful was when he took his shirt off to try and "make himself look bigger".

"People....often make really big, bold gestures in an attempt to intimidate, look at the way Michael was walking in that video and you'll notice his arms are rounded and splayed," she said.

She also told The Daily Mail that removing his shirt is a "fight response".

The second sign the expert identified was the rising inflections in his voice as he pleaded with his girlfriend.

"When someone is not telling the truth, their voice goes up a little bit at the end of a word," she highlighted.

"You'll notice that you can definitely hear the inflections in Michael's voice when he speaks to Jade".

Another "telling" sign was Clarke's choice to deflect the argument back to Jade.

"Go, hit me ... do it again. You're wrong, you're f**king wrong," Clarke deflected in the video.

The expert said that in choosing to say "you're wrong" instead of "I", "he's not taking any responsibility," which could be "indicative of guilt".

Another subtle sign, according to the expert, was that he "kept shuffling his feet while he was standing with Jade", which is a natural response.

The expert said that when people are being accused of something, "the limbic brain - which controls our behavioural and emotional responses - switches on and freezes body responses."

"So when he can't keep his feet still, that could seem to be a sign of something not quite right".

The last tell-tale sign was that he tried to invade Jade's personal space despite her walking away from him.

"Clearly, Michael got slapped and that's a big invasion of personal space," said the expert.

"But when someone tries to remove themselves from the situation like Jade walked off, and you go and follow them and get back in their space".

The expert said that it's impossible to tell if someone is lying based on their body language alone and that we should look out for clusters of behaviours.

"If they have three different things, then you can certainly tell that if they're not being dishonest, then there is something that is making them exceptionally uncomfortable, it's important to look at all aspects of their behaviour," she said.

Image: Getty

Karl Stefanovic and Michael Clarke caught in public scuffle over cheating claims

Australian cricket legend Michael Clarke and TV personality Karl Stefanovic have been filmed in a fight over cheating claims while holidaying in Noosa.

The incident occurred on January 10 and was released to The Daily Telegraph on Wednesday.

Clarke and Stefanovic were having dinner with their partners, Jade and Jasmine Yarbrough, when their friendly dinner was cut short as Jade confronted Clarke after she reportedly contacted the former cricketer's ex-partner Pip Edwards.

“You f**ked her on December 17 … You f**ked her, you’re a f**king dog,” Jade screamed.

Clarke vigorously denied the accusations, saying that he was with their celebrity accountant friend Anthony Bell.

"Baby, baby, Belly was at the house. I swear on my life, I swear at my life… That's not true, it's not true," he continued.

Jade refuted, saying that his ex-partner told her about it: "You're f**king lying to me. You are a piece of s**t. I just spoke to her. What is wrong with you?"

At this moment, her sister Jasmine and Stefanovic tried to intervene, which led to Clarke taking his anger out on the TV show host.

"Karlos, I can tell you now c**t, don't you f**king walk away. She can, she can punch me, but not you, you c**t," Clarke said.

Jade continued to yell at Clarke and hit him.

“You piece of s**t, don’t you f**king speak to him,” she defended her brother-in-law.

Clarke insisted that Jade was wrong, to which Jade retorted: "Oh am I wrong? You f**ked her [Edwards] on December 17, you f**ked her… you're a f**king dog… I'm going to show her every f**king message you ever f**king sent me".

The video footage ended with Jasmine and Bell separating the couple.

In a statement to The Daily Telegraph, the former cricketer accepted full responsibility for his actions.

“I’m absolutely gutted I’ve put people I hold in the highest regard in this position,” he said. “My actions in the lead-up to this altercation were nothing short of shameful and regrettable.

“I am shattered that because of my actions I’ve drawn women of class and integrity, and my mates, into this situation.”

“I own this fully and am the only one at fault.”

Clarke’s ex, Edward, also released a statement, hitting back with: “This is not my circus"

“Yet again, Michael in his true nature has not taken responsibility for his actions and I was blatantly lied to," she said.

Karl Stefanovic has yet to release a statement, with the topic being ignored on today's segment of The Today Show.

Image: Getty, The Daily Telegraph, 7News

Karl Stefanovic and his wife Jasmin Yarbrough have struggled to sell their beachfront home.

The pair purchased the stunning Sunshine Beach home in 2019 for $3.5 million in 2019, just before the pandemic hit and had only spent five weeks there.

The pair were told by real estate agents that their home could fetch up to $7.5 million but no offer was placed during last week’s auction.

Karl confessed that he couldn’t keep travelling between Sydney and Queensland during the pandemic so they decided to sell the house.

“We purchased the property on Seaview Terrace just before the pandemic hit,” Karl said.

“We’ve added a teenage retreat, a bathroom and a wine cellar. It’s a really beautiful slice of Sunshine Beach paradise. The views are incredible and we just love the people and area.

“The reality though is I can’t get away from work in Sydney nearly enough and the logistics of coming in and out of Queensland have been challenging.

“Eventually we will come back to Noosa when we have more time. It is also a two-minute walk to the beach.

Despite not being sold, the home can be still rented out for $3,700 a night.

Images: Tom Offerman Real Estate

Karl Stefanovic gushes over wife to publication he once branded as "despicable"

Karl Stefanovic has given a wide ranging interview to an outlet he once described as having a “despicable track record” and begged viewers not to read, as he continues the PR blitz surrounding his return to the Today show.

The breakfast show host spoke about his relationship with wife Jasmine Yarbrough and their excitement over the impending birth of their daughter next month in a new in-depth, three-part interview with the Daily Mail.

But in 2017, things were different, as the 45-year-old delivered a blistering on-air takedown of that same publication and begged viewers of the Today show to “never go on that website” after it published photos of him checking into a country NSW caravan park with a female colleague, with whom he was working on a story.

The article pointed out that then-girlfriend Yarbrough was “nowhere to be seen”.

At the time, Stefanovic begged people viewing the show at home to not read the Daily Mail.

“How would you feel if I judged you for what you’re wearing this morning. How would you feel if I criticised your hair, or mocked your make-up or shamed you for not wearing any?” he asked.

“I want to take a couple of minutes right now to call out an organisation that trades in these kind of insults. It’s a news website which seeks to profit from criticising and publicly humiliating people — women especially,” he said.

“The sleazy suggestion we are checking in somewhere and that I’m ‘settling in for a long night.’ Fact: this was work. We were filming a story about our struggling prawn farmers; they deserve a rum or two. The producer pictured on the website is a committed, talented, hardworking and totally professional young woman and not deserving of this cheap, lazy, sexist online slur.”

Stefanovic continued: “The idea that colleagues of the opposite sex cannot work together without something going on surely belongs to the 1950s. The Daily Mail has a long, despicable track record of denigrating women, of ridiculing women and objectifying women.”

He went on to give examples of previous stories the Daily Mail had published, about his then-Today colleagues Lisa Wilkinson and Sylvia Jeffreys. He also referenced the outlet’s infamous Samantha Armytage “granny panties” post that resulted in an apology from the publication.

“This is the same site that ridiculed Lisa for wearing the same blouse four months apart, the same site that tried to suggest that Lisa and Sylvia couldn’t work together, presumably because they are both women. The same site that tried to shame Sunrise host Samantha Armytage for wearing so-called ‘granny pants’.”

“I am over it. I don’t know what you think, but I hope Australia is over it as well. Go hard on me, make up your stories, publish your lies and send out the paps. But if you have any care whatever for the women of Australia, do not slur the reputations of others in your eagerness to throw mud at me. If you agree with me, the best thing that you can do is never go to that website.”

But now, as Today struggles in the ratings department against rival Sunrise, Stefanovic gave a wide-ranging interview to that same outlet, gushing about his love for Yarbrough.

“I think there’s a light about her and a loyalty and an inner beauty – that was the biggest attraction for me,” he told the publication.

“And she’s beautifully loyal to her friends and her family. She’s just a great Queensland girl and I’m very, very lucky … We do have a very loving relationship and to have a baby as an expression of that love is incredible.”

The couple will welcome a baby girl next month – her first and her husband’s fourth. Stefanovic is already a father to Jackson, 20, Ava, 15, and River, 13 – but he admitted that this time around, he’ll approach parenting differently.

“It’s obviously going to be different. I’m going to be a bit slower but I think slower might be a good thing,” he told the outlet.

“I’m not in such a hurry to go somewhere else and I’m not chasing the yarns overseas like I was when I was building up to this point in my career.

“And I don’t think that’s any great sleight on me as a father – it’s just the way things were. As a family we were working towards other things but you are busy in your 20s and 30s. You’re providing for your family every step of the way.

“You’re pretty busy making your way and you don’t stop to smell the roses sometimes but that’s the way it is.”

Karl Stefanovic addresses “hurtful” claims

Karl Stefanovic has denied claims that his wife Jasmine Yarbrough was responsible for the end of his 21-year marriage with Cassandra Thorburn.

In a new interview with Stellar, the Today show host said Yarbrough has had to endure public condemnation since they met in late 2016.

“She’s been through so much. She’s been pilloried and accused of things that didn’t happen,” Stefanovic said.

“It’s not her fault she fell in love with bugalugs, and the accusations were wrong about her stealing me from Cassandra. It’s rubbish and it’s hurtful.

“She’s just a beautiful, sweet woman from Queensland who runs a business and fell in love with me.”

Stefanovic was axed from Today days after his wedding to Yarbrough in December 2018. He made his return to the breakfast show earlier this year alongside Allison Langdon.

“People were saying to me, ‘You’ve lost the female demographic,’ and I’m not being arrogant or saying that didn’t happen, but I had so many lovely women coming up to me, women who have been divorced, saying: ‘I know there is a lot more going on here than we’re seeing. Keep going and don’t listen.’”

Stefanovic’s ex-wife Thorburn is now co-hosting the podcast Divorce Story – Surviving Separation, where she and journalist Annaliese Dent discuss the subject of marriage breakdown with experts and divorced women.

When asked about Thorburn’s project, Stefanovic said: “She’s earned the right to talk about whatever she wants. That’s just not how I would have done it. Whatever she does in her career and her life, I wish her the very best.”

We hope that we can drive enough awareness, research and funding to find a cure or at the very least find a way to detect this disease early.
